Conference titled The Independent Cultural Scene: Challenges and Perspectives, held in Tirana Times Library on Thursday, March 21, was organised by Independent Cultural Scene (Skena e Pavarur Kulturore – SPK), it’s founders Argjiro and Art Contact and was supported by Kooperativa through RegLab activity.

Following the general assembly of SPK, held the previous day, conference was an opportunity for dialogue and exchange of experiences as well as reaching conclusions that would strengthen independent cultural network in Albania drawing attention to cultural policies and further developing cultural sector.

Ilda Mara, Argjiro’s organizer and co-founder of SPK, made a brief overview of Independent Cultural Scene (SPK) development in six years of it’s existence, the SPK’s commitments and the attention to cultural policies.  Andi Tepelena, head of Art Contact and co-founder of SPK, unveiled the strategic objectives of SPK and informed about network restructuring, the election of new managing board that took place on 20th of March and new challenges that await the network.

Fjori Sinoruka, the journalist of Citizens Channel and BIRN, brought a detailed overview of albanian culture through figures, budgets, transparency issues, and fundraising. Agron Domi, the leader of the TIFF Institute and Gjergj Prevazi, the leader of the Albanian Dance Festival, also founding members of the SPK, shared their experience of the way they manage important festivals in Albania. Ardian Isufi, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Arts, presented the analysis of the state of the art today as well as the position of young artists. Since SPK developed youth strategy, creating a hub for young artists, Isufi also referred to potential partnership between SPK and the Faculty.

Besart Kadia of the Albanian Enterprise Institute brought a new approach to the SPK debate opening a question of how should artists be included in Albanian economy and politics. Lawyer and collector Perparim Kalo spoke about the Investment Law in Art emphasizing legal basis that SPK should focus on regarding cultural policy-making actions and contributions.

Independent Cultural Scene will continue with actions in the field of art and culture by adapting to the dynamics of that areas in Albania. Restructuring of national network, regional and European partnerships, as well as other pathways to bring art to the public, will continue to be the SPK’s priorities.
