REG LAB TWINNING EXCHANGE MENTORSHIP SUMMER SCHOOL
REG LAB TWINNING RAZMJENA MENTORSTVO LJETNA ŠKOLA

Bilal Yilmaz (https://bilalyilmaz.info) is an interdisciplinary artist-designer based in Istanbul. His work oscillates between art, design and social engagement. His practice is largely based on finding and uncovering the potentials that are hidden because of the contemporary social, political and financial reality, as well as on experiential and collaborative learning and making. In that sense, a lot of what he does aims at creating tools that activate possibilities and communities through imagining and experimenting with alternative systems of engagement and collective production. His object-based practice focuses on the medium of installation with a particular interest on interaction and light as the main elements of environments that shift the spectator’s perception and bring a joy of experience and collectivity. His research project Crafted In Istanbul (www.craftedinstanbul.com) is featured in Tania Brugera’s Arte Útil archive as a case-study that draws on artistic thinking to imagine, create and implement tactics that change how we act in society. Currently, in collaboration with curator Lydia Chatziiakovou, he is developing Creative-Craft Platform that aims to establish networks and communities of crafts and creatives in the post-industrial society, offering tools to introduce a collective archive of craft culture and activate creatives to think on the potential of crafts, while documenting and understanding the transformation of crafts’ know-how in the contemporary context.

Bilal Yilmaz has participated in both the Istanbul Biennale of Contemporary Art (2017) and the Istanbul Design Biennale (2014) and he has exhibited in international festivals, museums and galleries in Turkey and abroad.
